How to Create a Beautiful Space For Your New Baby
Welcoming a new baby into your family is an exciting time, and designing their nursery is a special part of the preparation. Creating a calm, functional, and beautiful baby room can be a fun and rewarding project.
Before I dive further into this, I'm going to take a minute to acknowledge the mothers who missed the opportunity of planning and designing their baby's nursey. This may sound like a little thing to some however it is one of the many things a mother of a premature baby will miss out on and will later mourn. All the things which you expect to experience and see other expectant mothers experience will be a process of healing for many years after giving birth.
This is one of the reason's I popped a Baby Room Design template in The Premie Journal. Whilst sitting in the hospital, it gives mum a chance to still do this and make this experience a priority. You will likely not be able to fulfill this due to you being present in the hospital everyday but it will help you plan and buy piece by piece the items you need. By the time baby comes out, you may have ticked most things off and feel somewhat in control when most of the time you don't.
What are some design tips you need to think about? Some design tips to help you create the perfect baby room.
Choose a Theme or Color Palette
Selecting a theme or color palette sets the foundation for your nursery design. Whether you choose a whimsical theme like woodland creatures, a chic and modern look, or a tranquil color scheme in pastels, a cohesive theme brings the room together.
Colour Tip: Soft and neutral colors can create a calming environment, while vibrant hues can stimulate your baby's development.
Focus on Safety
Safety is paramount in a baby’s room. Ensure all furniture is sturdy and secured to the walls to prevent tipping. Keep the crib away from windows, and avoid placing heavy or potentially hazardous items on shelves above the crib.
Safety Tip: Use cordless window treatments or secure cords out of reach to eliminate choking hazards.
Invest in Quality Furniture
Quality furniture is an investment that can last through many stages of your child’s growth. Key pieces include a crib, changing table, and a comfortable chair for feedings. Opt for convertible furniture that can adapt as your baby grows.
Savings Tip: A crib that converts into a toddler bed can save money and space in the long run.
Create Ample Storage Solutions
Babies come with a lot of gear, so efficient storage solutions are essential. Consider shelves, baskets, and storage bins to keep everything organized. Labeling storage can make it easier to find what you need.
Space Tip: Multi-functional furniture, such as a changing table with drawers, can maximize space.
Incorporate Soft Lighting
Soft and adjustable lighting is crucial for a baby room. It provides the illumination needed for nighttime feedings and diaper changes without overstimulating your baby.
Lighting Tip: Use a dimmable lamp or install a dimmer switch to control light levels.
Add Personal Touches
Personal touches make the nursery feel special and unique. Consider adding framed family photos, custom artwork, or handmade items like quilts or knitted blankets.
Unique Tip: DIY projects can add a personal touch, such as painting a mural or creating your own wall art.
Ensure Comfort for Both Baby and Parents
A comfortable and practical setup ensures that both baby and parents can enjoy the nursery. A cozy rug, blackout curtains for naps, and a rocking chair or glider can create a relaxing environment.
Cozy Tip: Consider a comfortable nursing pillow to make feeding times more comfortable.
Maintain Flexibility
As your baby grows, their needs will change. Keep the room flexible so you can easily make adjustments. Modular furniture and accessories that can be updated make the transition smoother.
Versatile Tip: Opt for decor elements like removable wall decals that can be changed as your child gets older.
